Preschool of the Arts in Gramercy was amazing. All of the staff are caring and really went the extra mile to look after our child and really took an interest in their development. The facility is kept in immaculate condition at all times
We did extensive research and visits before we went to the facility and this was our favorite before our son went there and then the staff exceeded our expectations in their care and love.
My son has been going to Preschool of the Arts at Gramercy for 2 years (since he was 2) and has absolutely thrived. It was a big transition for him to go from childcare at home to a preschool environment. As the weeks and months passed, I saw him blossom as he became more outgoing, made friends and found his own special place in the classroom. We continued at PoTA for the 3s program, which he absolutely loved. The teachers are incredible, there’s simply no comparison. Every day he comes home to tell me about his day in great detail and cannot wait to return in the morning. The level of creativity and warmth makes this community so incredibly special, and that comes from the director, Rachel, and her team of teachers. They make every child feel like they are the focus. I am confident my son is moving into Pre-K beyond well-equipped thanks to this special place.
Being a first time mom to choose the right environment for our daughter was the most important thing, and the Preschool of the Arts is beyond any expectation I ever had! The team that work with the kids is the most precious asset of the school, from Directors to the Teachers, the love and personal care given to the kids is just priceless. The Reggio Emilia approach gives so much space for my girl to express herself and create, results at home are fantastic. Super recommend!
Both of my children went to this preschool starting at the age of 1.5 years and they loved it! All of their teachers throughout the years have been loving and supportive of their growth and learning. The director is a great leader and although at times strict, manages the school very well. It is also one of the few preschools in the area that offer a full day program (9-5). Highly recommend!
Teachers are the best. Highly qualified personnel with good values and a lot of patience. Love that they teach my kids about the holidays and Shabbat. Love that they cook lunch on site. After my first son attended I couldn’t think of any other school for my number two. The schedule in the location near us wasn’t working for us for number two so I looked at so many other places but nothing comes close to even consider. It’s not just the facility that’s great, it’s really the teachers. You can’t find that level of teachers anywhere else. So I ended up taking number to to POTA across town where the schedule fits me better. Super happy with it albeit the daily commute.
Here are answers to the questions parents most often ask about our school.
Inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, an innovative Italian philosophy of early childhood education, and informed by the spirit of Jewish discovery, our program fosters curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong love of learning. We invite you to explore our website, speak with one of our site directors, or review our brochure to learn more about how we nurture wonder, learning, and essential life skills. Our educators thoughtfully design curricular maps with the whole child in mind, integrating math, literacy, social-emotional learning, science, gross motor development, art, and sensory exploration. Because we value the child’s voice and natural curiosity, our approach supports emergent curriculum, an evolving, responsive style of teaching that follows the interests of the children and dives deeper into topics they care about.
Our school is community centered and welcomes children and families from diverse backgrounds. Some families join because of the Jewish aspect. However, some joing because of the arts, proximity to their home, schedules, etc.
At POTA, we value other arts such as poetry, bookmaking, storytelling, theater, dancing, and music making. The teachers work hard to incorporate these different mediums into the classroom at different parts of the year.
Our progressive model follows the interest, strengths, and curiousities of our chidren therefore we keep our classes small to provide intimate learning opportunities supported by a co-teaching model. We are very intentional when creating classes by allowing students the chance to reconnect with familiar faces and create new friendships.5 (See ratio below)

This is one of the most common questions we get asked. In our progressive play-based environment, children build strong academic foundations through meaningful, hands-on experiences. As they explore and play, they naturally develop skills in literacy, math, science, and problem-solving, along with important social and emotional growth. Our educators design activities that align academic and developmental goals with each child’s interests. This emergent curriculum approach ensures that learning is both engaging and effective. Children not only meet their milestones but also develop a lasting love of learning that sets them up for long-term success.
Preschool of the Arts is conscious to provide balanced snacks for the children. Snack time consists of a carb, a protein, and a fruit or vegetable. Fort those families who opt-in to our lunch program, they can expect the same nutritionally balanced meals.
In NYC we are fortunate to have so many parks and playground available to us! Chelsea Green, Madision Square Park, Peter Cooper and Stuy Town playgrounds are just some of the parks we utilize throughout the year.
Preschool of the Arts is Jewish-inspired, weaving Jewish values and traditions into our daily routine. Each day includes time for Tefillah (prayer) and Tzedakah (charity), and throughout the year we learn about and celebrate all the Jewish holidays. We also come together as a community to celebrate Shabbat every week.
One vision, one mission – 4 locations!
Preschool of the Arts was formed in the East Village over 20 years ago with the mission to provide downtown families with a stellar preschool experience. As our school began to develop a reputation for excellence in education as well as a warm and welcoming atmosphere, we saw the need to expand in order to better serve our community. We wanted to ensure that each of our schools retained the character of our original vision for Preschool of the Arts while being accessible and in walking distance to the communities and families downtown.
We are thrilled and honored to provide a boutique school experience to our downtown families in Gramercy Park, Chelsea, Union Square and Greenwich Village and their surrounding neighborhoods.
